WHAT X IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

X belongs to a group of medicines called antimalarials. They contain two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride.

X has two uses:

to prevent malaria in adults and children who weigh more than 40 kg

to treat malaria in adults and children who weigh more than 11 kg

Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, which passes the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) into the bloodstream. X prevents malaria by killing this parasite. For people who are already infected with malaria, X also kills these parasites.

Protect yourself from catching malaria

People of any age can get malaria. It is a serious disease, but is preventable. As well as taking X, it is very important that you also take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.• Use insect repellent on exposed areas of the skin. Wear light coloured clothing that covers most of the body, especially after sunset as this is the time when mosquitoes are most active. Sleep in a screened room or under a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide. Close windows and doors at sunset, if they are not screened. Consider using an insecticide (mats, spray, plug-ins) to clear a room of insects or to deter mosquitoes from entering the room. If you need further advice, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

QUÉ ES X Y PARA QUÉ SE UTILIZA

X pertenece a un grupo de medicamentos denominados antipalúdicos. Contiene dos principios activos, atovacuona y proguanil hidroclorido.

X tiene dos usos:

Prevención del paludismo en adultos y niños con un peso superior a 40 kg

Tratamiento del paludismo en adultos y niños con un peso superior a 11 kg

El paludismo (o malaria) se transmite por la picadura de un mosquito infectado, que introduce el parásito de la malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) en la sangre. X previene la malaria matando este parásito. Para las personas que ya han sido infectadas de malaria, X también mata estos parásitos.

Protéjase de contraer la malaria

Cualquier persona, de cualquier edad, puede contraer la malaria. Es una enfermedad grave, pero es prevenible. Incluso tomando X, es muy importante que tome precauciones para evitar que le puedan picar los mosquitos.• Use repelente de mosquitos en todas aquellas áreas del cuerpo expuestas. Lleve ropa de colores claros que cubra la mayor parte posible del cuerpo, especialmente al anochecer que es cuando los mosquitos están más activos. Duerma en una habitación protegida contra mosquitos o bajo una mosquitera impregnada con insecticida. Cierre las ventanas y las puertas al anochecer, si no están protegidas. Tenga en cuenta usar un insecticida (pastilla, spray, anti-mosquitos eléctrico) para despejar la habitación de insectos o impedir que entren en la habitación.
